Loveable Whiteinch

Loveable Whiteinch is a campaign led by local people to encourage Glasgow City Council to implement the proposals for Victoria Park Drive South in Whiteinch as part of the Liveable Neighbourhoods programme.

Liveable Neighbourhoods

The Liveable Neighbourhoods (LN) (www.glasgow.gov.uk/liveableneighbourhoods) programme is Glasgow City Council's approach to combining elements of the 20-minute neighbourhood concept with the place principle and forms part of Glasgow's new Transport Strategy.

There are four themes of Liveable Neighbourhoods

  • Local Town Centres
  • Everyday Journeys
  • Active Travel
  • Streets for People

To date there have been three phases looking at thirteen different neighbourhoods. Yoker to Whiteinch is in Phase 2 and Knightswood to Anniesland is in Phase 3.

Yoker to Whiteinch

The Yoker to Whiteinch neighbourhood covers Yoker, Scotstoun, Jordanhill and Whiteinch. The consultation process started in November 2022. The Stage 2 reports were presented and approved by Glasgow City Council Environment and Liveable Neighbourhoods City Policy Committee in March 2024 (Item 4.1).

There were six projects included in the Stage 2 report

  1. Transforming Anniesland Road West
  2. Transforming Victoria Park Drive South
  3. Scotstoun neighbourhood filtered permeability
  4. Jordanhill School street improvement and accessibility
  5. Dumbarton Road accessibility & Hawick Street Bridge improvements
  6. NCN7 West route optioneering and accessibility

Transforming Victoria Park Drive South

There are several proposed changes and improvements to Victoria Park Drive South including:

  • Footway added on south side of street.
  • Carriageway reduced to single lane in each direction and 30mph speed limit enforcement.
  • Bi-directional cycle track with buffer to carriageway
  • New signalised pedestrian / cycle crossing

Community events

The Loveable Whiteinch working group has organised two community events, both of which were held at Whiteinch Library.

Loveable Whiteinch Sat 21 Sep 2024

Over 70 people attended this event, which was part of the Doors Open Day programme. Local historian Sandra Malcolm gave a fantastic presentation about the history of Whiteinch from the early days right up to the decimation of the community to make way for the Clyde Tunnel and Clydeside Expressway.

The event also featured a short film about Whiteinch from the 1970s just after the completion of the Clyde Tunnel and related works. The film can be viewed at the National Library of Scotland Moving Image Archive which is based at the Kelvin Hall.

The second event was a workshop format to discuss and consider the LN proposals for VPDS in more detail. In particular the proposals for the strech of Victoria Park Drive South which runs along the south perimeter of the park.

Martin Keane gave a presentation of what has happened, what might have happened and what is planned to happen for the roads and the local community.
